Sonic and Persona planes to take to the skies in AirAsia collaboration
On October 8, AirAsia announced a partnership with Sega and its group company Atlus, with the aim of producing immersive experiences that combine air travel with gaming. The collaboration will kick off with a focus on the Sonic and Persona series, featuring specially decorated aircraft, in-flight treats and crossover merch.
AirAsia is one of the ASEAN region’s leading low-cost airlines that has expanded into a travel and lifestyle brand. Their collaboration with Sega and Atlus will feature two eye-catchingly decorated planes. Sonic and friends will jazz up one of AirAsia X’s Airbus A330 aircraft (tail number 9M-XXU), while Persona 5’s Joker and Morgana will adorn an AirAsia Malaysia Airbus A320 (tail number 9M-AFF). These two video game-themed aircraft will fly a variety of different routes across AirAsia’s network of over 100 destinations.
The partnership also aims to continue the game culture experience on board. For example, it will be possible to pre-book Sonic’s Golden Ring Cakes on AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia X Malaysia flights. The mango and lemon-flavored doughnuts will be served with yuzu soda, and come with a Sonic-themed sticker to take home. Starting in early 2025, AirAsia will offer a variety of collaboration merch. This includes models of the Persona and Sonic planes, as well as keychains.
Speaking about the partnership, Sega’s president Shuji Utsumi commented: “We are honored to be able to undertake such a wonderful initiative with AirAsia. The Sonic and Persona series are expanding not only in Japan but throughout Asia. We believe that the synergy created by the collaboration of travel and gaming, two forms of entertainment, will bring us new discoveries.”
