Solo indie developer earns $1,000 from viral short videos showcasing their game, decides to spend it all on buying other indie games

After earning $1,000 in channel revenue from promoting their work-in-progress game Sensory Overload, solo dev Pancake Studios spent it all on other indie games.

An indie developer has spent all $1,000 in earnings from viral YouTube shorts on buying indie games, picking up around 120 titles recommended to them by other fellow developers and gamers on X.

Slovenian solo developer onlypancak3s (Pancake Studios) reported on March 23 that their channel, featuring clips of their in-development game Sensory Overload, had recently been monetized, generating about $1,019 in revenue and bringing them nearly 14,000 Steam Wishlists in four days. Interestingly, they immediately announced they would put the entire amount back into the indie scene, inviting others to reply with Steam links to their recommended small-scale or solo-developed titles.

A day later, they followed through, spending roughly $1,000 on 120 games. The developer later called it “the best $1,000 I’ve ever spent,” with many creators of the selected games replying with thanks. They even shared the full lineup of purchased games via a public Google spreadsheet, and it includes a wide range of genres with varying price points, from popular titles like Rusty’s Retirement, Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus, and Brotato, to lesser-known projects.

As for Pancake Studios’ own upcoming game, Sensory Overload is a fast-paced voxel runner, which, true to its name, is designed to overwhelm your senses with its disorienting level design and psychedelic visuals. You’ll avoid obstacles while racing down a tube-shaped field as the game attempts to “assault your sense of balance.” The game is currently in development for PC (Steam).
