Snowbreak: Containment Zone’s dev says sexy updates will continue despite criticism: “We know our players’ needs”
Amazing Seasun Game’s shooter gacha RPG Snowbreak: Containment Zone has gone through ups and downs since its global release last Winter. But in May 2024, the title’s concurrent player count suddenly rose almost three-fold compared to initial post-release figures (SteamDB). We asked the producer of Snowbreak’s Japanese division how the game’s recent momentum looks from the developers’ side and what led to the sudden spike.
This article summarizes excerpts from the full interview conducted by our Japanese sister-site.
Commenting on the game’s recent performance, the producer notes that Snowbreak’s recent rise in popularity is significant and well reflected in the numbers – with sales increasing and daily active users rising by over 50% on average. According to the producer, the biggest contributing factor to this was the management and development teams’ efforts to steer the game in the direction of fanservice, i.e., to give players what they want.
For context, Snowbreak: Containment Zone recently updated its age rating to M/PEGI 16 and has been actively releasing sexy and revealing character skins. The developers have also been regularly implementing new character voice lines and intimate interactions.
Getting Snowbreak back up on its feet was not a simple feat though, as the producer recounts, “The management team never cut corners in surveying user needs, improving the localization and maintaining the community. No matter how tough the situation got, the development team did not give up on Snowbreak, and based on player feedback, they improved the main story, character designs, game modes, and various features across the board to the best of their ability. Their persistence was an extremely important factor.”
According to the producer, Snowbreak will continue pursuing fanservice, which means players can expect more attractive skins and new interactions in future updates. Addressing the controversy surrounding Snowbreak’s change of direction, he comments, “We have received criticism of the game and its new approach from certain people who are not Snowbreak players. But rest assured, we know very well who we should provide our services to.”
In addition, the game’s creators will be exploring new possibilities for combat and multiplayer.
Snowbreak: Containment Zone is available for the PC (Steam, Epic Store), iOS and Android.
I’m glad things are going well for the studio it’s one of my favorite gachas to play. This kinda goes to show you don’t really need to please everyone. Focus on your core audience and their needs and you’ll be rewarded. “A game for everyone is a game for No one.”
Always a good move to do what your main audiences ask as they are the most loyal when things are not the best and you can build upon them. You can never do so with audiences that have too much varying tastes or interests that are beyond values of the brand. This should be standard throughout much of entertainment and various other industries.
