Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai is tired of people assuming he possesses secret Nintendo knowledge “no matter what he says” on X

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai shared his excitement for the upcoming Nintendo Direct on X, but not without a warning to fans.

Super Smash Bros. and Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai took to X today to share his excitement for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, where all the long-awaited details about the Nintendo Switch 2 will be unveiled. However, Sakurai has learned from his past mistakes (if they can be called so), and preemptively warned users that he does not, in fact possess any secret knowledge about what Nintendo plans to announce and is not offering any mysterious hints.

It’s one hour long?? That’s a surprise.
…I know people are going to suspect no matter what I say, but I do not know the contents of the announcement (besides, I don’t belong to Nintendo).
I’m looking forward to it!

If Sakurai sounds amusingly exasperated as he mentions that people are going to dissect his words no matter what he says, it’s because he’s been through it quite a few times. Just last week, his simple “Oh-ho!” in response to Nintendo announcing the March 27 Nintendo Direct earned a crowd of people mistranslating his words as “method” (thanks to AI and machine translation) and trying to figure out deeper meanings behind the post.

An even more ridiculous example was when a literal single syllable from him back in February caused fans to assume that he must be working on Super Smash Bros. 6 and making a cryptic allusion to it. It escalated so far that fans were already bombarding him with cameo requests.

When he lamented the fact that he “can’t tweet anything carelessly” anymore, Sakurai even earned the sympathy of Undertale creator Toby Fox, yet another developer whose fans’ favorite past time is thinking up conspiracy theories based on crumbs (although it’s grown into a self-aware meme by now).
