Shuhei Yoshida shares theory on why Sony hasn’t done anything with Bloodborne

PlayStation pioneer and Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared his opinion on why Bloodborne has yet to receive a remaster or a sequel, despite vocal demand from the game’s passionate fanbase.

Bloodborne was released in 2015 for the PS4. Developed by FromSoftware, the game has amassed a cult following of fans eager to see more of the game’s rich gothic aesthetic and fast-paced, hard-as-nails combat. However, despite the game’s critical success and sales that surpassed Sony’s expectations, nothing more has been done with the IP (which is owned by Sony).

In an extensive interview with Kinda Funny Games on YouTube (cited by Genki on X), Yoshida put forward a theory on why Bloodborne hasn’t received a follow-up. He mentions that a Bloodborne remake/sequel is the game that he receives the most requests about (followed by titles like Legend of the Dragoon and Apex Legends).

“People wonder why we haven’t really done anything. (…) My theory is, because I remember Miyazaki-san really loved Bloodborne, what he created.” Yoshida mused. “So, I think he is interested but he is so successful and he is so busy, so he cannot do it himself. But he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that is my guess. I am not revealing any secret information.” Yoshida does add a caveat that he is no longer involved in first party game production, so he doesn’t really know what is going on with the IP at the moment.

In slight contrast to this statement, however, Miyazaki was previously interviewed by IGN about the possibility of a Bloodborne remake on PS5. He mentioned that it wasn’t his place to talk about future Bloodborne releases, adding that “We simply don’t own the IP at FromSoftware.” Therefore, it seems that the decision may have to come down from Sony.
