Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven started out as a 20 to 30-hour game, but will end up offering 40 to 50 hours of gameplay, producer says
Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, slated for launch on October 24, will bring a JRPG classic from 1993 to modern platforms. Apart from a complete graphics overhaul with stunning 3D characters, the remake will also introduce QoL improvements, battle system adjustments and more. In a recent interview with Famitsu, producer Shinichi Tatsuke gave some interesting insights into what’s new in the game and how much its content has been expanded.
According to Tatsuke, Romancing SaGa 2 remake’s development team (which also worked on the original game) started off the project envisioning roughly a 20- to 30- hour average playtime, but now that they have actual playtest data to go by, they’ve updated their estimate to a much lengthier 40 to 50 hours.
While the original Romancing SaGa 2 included dungeons that were relatively “short and simple,” as Tatsuke puts it, the remake expands dungeons to provide players with more of a challenge. This is one of the reasons why the remake is meatier than the original game. In addition, Tatsuke notes that the game going 3D has made exploration possible, which is also influencing playing time.
The producer also makes one mysterious remark related to the game’s title – when asked about the meaning of the subtitle “Revenge of the Seven,” Tatsuke says that “there is a reason why we named it so instead of just calling it a remake. I can’t talk about it yet – but there is a proper reason for it. Please stay tuned for further information, including whether or not it has to do with additional game elements.”
This suggests we could be looking at something extra in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, although, the team has also made it clear that the remake will not alter the original story, save for adjustments made to align the text with what’s being depicted in 3D.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is scheduled to launch for PS4/PS5 and Nintendo Switch on October 24, with the Steam version following the next day.
