Resident Evil 3 remake’s Umbrella Noodles posters are actually an Easter Egg reference to a RE item from over 20 years ago
The official Resident Evil Portal X page recently pointed out that players can find several Umbrella Noodles posters strewn throughout Raccoon City in the Resident Evil 3 remake. These advertisements, depicting a scrumptious-looking bowl of ramen under the iconic Umbrella Corporation logo, are actually a reference to a special item that appeared earlier on in Resident Evil’s history.
Lore-wise, the Noodles posters should also be in the Resident Evil 2 remake but since most of that game takes place in the Raccoon City Police Department and Umbrella’s underground lab, very little time is spent exploring the city proper. Jill’s route through Raccoon City in the Resident Evil 3 remake allows her to experience local sights such as the Toy Uncle shop that sells Mega Man figures, the St. Michael Clock Tower (Nemesis included), and the aforementioned Umbrella Noodles posters.
A closer look at the advertisement shows that Umbrella Noodles look pretty normal- they even have the same lettering as real-world Nissin Cup Noodles. You have your standard dehydrated shrimp, bean sprouts, red pickled ginger, and seaweed that cover the ramen noodles. There’s a possibility that Umbrella Noodles don’t contain all these ingredients (as with most instant noodles ads), but when you’re busy running away from zombies and other biohazards, you can’t be picky about what you eat.
Umbrella Noodles’ history actually stretches back further in the Resident Evil franchise, first appearing as a special item in Resident Evil Outbreak on the PlayStation 2. You can pick up a pack of Umbrella Noodles in Room 101 of all places- which just makes them seem all the more suspicious.
As you might expect, fans have expressed a great deal of criticism towards the ad in Resident Evil 3 remake, mostly because the Umbrella Corporation is responsible for almost all the terrors in the Resident Evil franchise. The noodles might be “sprinkled with a dash of t-Virus”, but that won’t stop others from giving them a try.
The Umbrella Corporation’s status as a multinational conglomerate allowed it to branch into multiple industries, with the food industry being one of them. These Umbrella Noodles might just be noodles and have no other harmful additives. But what do you think? Would you try a cup of Umbrella Noodles if you knew what sick, twisted things the company was working on?
