Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra draws comparisons to Honkai: Star Rail and Trails series for its battle system

Aniplex’s Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra has been announced for a global 2024 release on PC (Steam), iOS and Android. A gameplay trailer and in-game screenshots were revealed together with the announcement. The sneak preview of the game’s battle system has drawn comparisons to titles such as Honkai: Star Rail and the Trails series.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra is the latest RPG adaptation of the Madoka anime series. Set in The Lighthouse – a place of darkness illuminated by the memories of countless Magical Girls, the game brings together the series’ whole cast.

In Magia Exedra, you explore Witch Labyrinths to collect the light from the memories of Magical Girls and items. The game also features simple command-based combat, fought by forming a team of five Magical Girls, each of a certain type. A break system allows you to drain your enemy’s break gauge by using the right elements against them, leaving room for strategy.

In the screenshots of Magia Exedra’s battle scenes, bits of UI hinting at the game’s system can be seen, and these have been garnering attention from users. For example, the order of the characters’ actions during battle are displayed on the left side of the screen and suggest that the system does not divide turns between allies and enemies. The camera’s position behind the characters, as well as the party member icons displayed below are reminiscent of the Action Time Battles of the Trails series.

Developed by Pokelabo and f4samurai (who previously worked on Magia Record), it has been openly confirmed that Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra was influenced by the Trails series. It seems that this inspiration will be reflected in the battle system. However, users have also likened the title’s battle interface to Honkai: Star Rail, perhaps because of the “Single Attack” option displayed on the right side of the screen.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra is scheduled to launch in 2024 for PC (Steam), iOS and Android.
