PS5 just significantly raised its prices in Japan, and people aren’t happy
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a revision of its suggested retail prices for the PS5 and its peripherals in the Japanese market on August 27 (source: PlayStation.Blog)
With the revision, the PS5’s price will jump from 66,980 yen (about $463) to 79,980 yen (about $552). Similarly, the PS5 Digital Edition’s price will go up from 59,980 yen (about $414) to 72,980 yen (about $504). This makes the console more expensive to buy in Japan than in the US (when looking at recent conversion rates). The revision will be effective starting Monday, September 2.
As the reason for raising prices, Sony cites “severe” external conditions which are impacting the company, such as fluctuations in the global economy.
Unsurprisingly, the revision is causing much dissatisfaction among Japanese users, who find the new prices “way too expensive,” especially considering the console is already over 4 years old. In addition, a DualSense will now put buyers back over 11,000 yen – an unprecedented price for a controller.
