PS3 owner accidentally melts console trying to revive it with a lifehack, then finds out it actually works again

After trying the "towel trick" on their busted PlayStation 3, their console came out looking like a burnt phonebook.

While it’s perfectly normal to turn to DIY methods to repair a broken game console to save money, you normally should follow tutorials that make sense. In the case of Reddit user seascouuut, their unorthodox method of cooking their busted PlayStation 3 had major cosmetic consequences. On the other hand, the lifehack actually brought the console back to life, for the time being.

Melted PlayStation 3

Upon discovering that their early model PS3 was plagued with the dreaded yellow light of death (which indicates a general hardware failure), seascouuut threw caution to the wind and decided to follow a video tutorial that apparently solved the issue. According to them, a temporary solution to the yellow light of death is to increase the temperature of the PS3’s processor and GPU. After wrapping their console in a towel and aiming a BaBylissPRO Ionic hairdryer at the rear air vent (they accidentally left it running for seven minutes), the once sleek PS3 now resembles a burnt phonebook.

Surprisingly, the console turned on after it had cooled for some time. Not wanting to push their luck, they quickly copied their save files to an external storage device.

Melted PlayStation 3 running Linux

Seascouuut’s most recent update has them installing the open-source operating system Linux onto the PS3 and asking commenters for a way to activate the console’s video drivers. While it is safe to say that the stock PS3 software has been overwritten, perhaps the console can still live a second life as a portable computer (albeit a severely damaged one).
