Pokémon Legends Z-A: Japanese fans disappointed as Cyndaquil seemingly gets left out of Johto dream team

Some fans are expressing their dismay that Tepig is the fire starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends Z-A, instead of Cyndaquil.

The Pokémon Company recently revealed the three starter Pokémon for its upcoming Switch game Pokémon Legends Z-A, alongside a new trailer. However, the information revealed about Pokémon Legends Z-A so far has prompted disappointment among some Japanese fans because one Pokémon – Cyndaquil, appears to have been left out.

Cyndaquil’s absence has been so strongly felt by some Trainers that the timid fire mouse Pokémon started trending on X (under its Japanese name ‘Hinoarashi’). Pokémon Legends Z-A’s starters are Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile, as revealed in the second trailer above. As described in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, these three Pokémon all hail from the Johto region. However, fellow Johto Pokémon Cyndaquil seems to be missing from the overall line-up at the time of writing.

This prompted Japanese speaking Cyndaquil fans to take to X to express their disappointment:

Post translation: Cyndaquil: “What about me?”

Post translation: It looks like poor Cyndaquil has been left out of the Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile line-up.

Users are theorizing that Cyndaquil is absent because the fire Pokémon was one of the starters in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which seems a likely reason. Those who want to begin their journey with a Fire Starter will have to pick Tepig instead.

Pokémon Legends Z-A will feature a new take on the traditional Pokémon battle system, adding real-time elements to combat. You will now be able to actively dodge attacks by moving your Pokémon out of the way.

Pokémon Legends Z-A is scheduled to be released on the Nintendo Switch in late 2025. It is possible that it might end up being the last Pokémon title on the console before the series moves over to the Switch 2.
