No one was ready for Mecha BREAK’s character creator to be that pretty, and it’s safe to say it has contributed to the closed playtest’s impressive numbers
Over the past few days, China-based Amazing Seasun Games has been holding the first closed beta for their upcoming free-to-play mech shooter Mecha BREAK. Despite participation being limited (users can request access via Steam or get a key through Twitch Drops), the beta has been doing impressive numbers, peaking at over 10k concurrent players and maintaining a solid average of around 4k players (SteamDB).
With player figures surpassing the open playtest of Sony’s Concord and inching close to Marvel Rivals, Mecha BREAK has been full of surprises. Obviously, players are pleased with the breath of fresh air the title brings to the hero shooter genre with its high degree of mech customization and high-adrenaline aerial dogfights. However, apart from mech-related goodness, Mecha BREAK seems to have sealed the deal with its character customization.
Mech enthusiasts normally go into mech games hoping to create and pilot the mech of their dreams, but Mecha BREAK’s playtesters were pleased to find out they would also be making some dreamy pilots.
Frankly, the character customization is borderline ridiculous in how it lets you engineer even the clap of your pilot’s butt cheeks with its plethora of buttock-related sliders. But to be fair, the game is equally detailed with everything else too, letting you edit everything from the individual reflections in your character’s eyes to the width of their kneecaps.
But most importantly, Mecha BREAK’s character customizer makes it easy to make a beautiful character, and games that scratch peoples’ itch to look at and project onto pretty people are always in demand. This seems to have contributed to the positive response to Mecha BREAK, if the amount of people having fun recreating Ayanami Rei and other characters in-game is anything to go by. The game’s second phase of beta testing, which will be open to all PC users, will start from August 10, and it will be interesting to see how much the playerbase grows.
Mecha BREAK is also scheduled to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S down the line. To find out more about the upcoming game’s influences and development, check out our full interview with Mecha BREAK’s producer and our early hands-on preview.
