Nitroplus scenario writer Vio Shimokura – known for his work on titles like You and Me and Her: A Love Story, Mojika – Truth Rears Its Ugly Head and Steins;Gate – recently talked to 4Gamer about his methodology and views on writing visual novels.
As the author of many works exploring dark and sexual themes, Shimokura also touched on the topic of increasingly strict restrictions on adult content in games. When asked how he feels about the recent wave of delisting and censorship, the creator commented, “Even at Nitro Origin, we haven’t been able to release many adult games lately. As the name of our adult game label (Nitro Origin) suggests, Nitroplus’s identity is strongly rooted in its origins as an adult game developer. Personally, I’d like to keep creating opportunities to make adult games in ways that fit the times.”

Nitro Origin is the label behind games like Saya no Uta and Full Metal Daemon: Muramasa – which Nitroplus has gained widespread recognition for. Additionally, the company also operates the popular Nitro+Chiral brand, which specializes in adult games catered to women. Given their track record, it comes as no surprise that the developer sees its roots in the genre, despite how big they’ve become in mainstream entertainment like TV anime.
On the other hand, Shimokura also mentions the possibility of Nitroplus publishing its visual novels on Steam under its own name going forward (as it has already done for Rusty Rabbit and Dolls Nest), which could possibly be tricky for the developer given the pressure Steam has been under to regulate adult content. “But regardless of how things turn out,” he says, “be it games or anime, I’ll just create the things I find interesting, without overthinking things or paying mind to cultural considerations.”
