Last year, Japan saw its first arrest related to modifying and reselling Nintendo Switch consoles when a 58-year-old man from Ibaraki Prefecture was taken into police custody. Following up on the case a year later, NTV News reported on April 14 that the man has been found guilty by the Japanese court, resulting in a suspended prison sentence and fine, which sets yet another precedent.
The man was initially arrested on suspicion of soldering modified parts to the circuit boards of used Nintendo Switch consoles and selling them online for about $195 per unit. The consoles were modded so that they could run pirated games.
In a hearing held on April 14, the court found the man guilty of infringing on Nintendo’s trademark rights and other violations. He has thus been sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for three years, and a fine of approximately $3.5 thousand dollars.
