An employee of a Nexon subcontractor is being fined 100 million won (roughly $72,249 USD) in damages for leaking key information related to last December’s MapleStory Next Showcase. As reported by ThisIsGame (via machine translation). Nexon received a favorable court ruling after filing criminal charges for trade secret infringement and lodging a lawsuit seeking damages from the leaker and their company.
Changseop Kim, the current director of MapleStory South Korea, revealed as much during a Maple Now livestream on August 14. According to Kim, while MapleStory Next Showcases started as a series of video showcases where new information is announced, they have since evolved into social gatherings for the playerbase to celebrate their love for the game. The leaker not only undermined the original intent of the Next Showcases but also spoiled the experience for many MapleStory players.
Moving forward, Nexon states that “any attempt to leak information that has not been made public through official channels in advance or similar will be considered an illegal act that hinders the smooth operation of our game service.” In addition, the company will “continue to take all possible measures against such information leaks and plan to respond strongly without lenience to prevent any damage to users.”
