New Street Fighter esports tournament punishes teams who don’t get enough sleep
In Japan today, a new type of Street Fighter tournament was announced. Taking place on August 31, Sleep Fighter puts a new twist on competitive gaming (source: Defaminicogamer).
During the esports tournament, 4 teams of 3 players will battle it out in Street Fighter. However, in addition to trying to beat their opponents on screen, the teams will also be striving to get a good night’s sleep in the run up to the event. Each team member must get at least 6 hours shuteye each night in the week leading up to the Sleep Fighter tournament. If the three-person team’s overall sleep score is not over 126-hour threshold, they will get 5 points taken away for each hour of sleep that they are short on. As an added bonus, the team with the longest total sleep time gets to decide the tournament’s match combinations, potentially putting them at a big advantage.
According to the official website, this is the first ever esports tournament in the world with a special rule that players will be penalized if they don’t get enough sleep. The tournament is run by SSP, a Japanese pharmaceutical company that manufactures a sleep-improvement medicine called Drewell. The tournament is part of their Active Sleep Project, which encourages people to prioritize sleep when taking on challenges.
The Sleep Fighter tournament will take place on August 31 from 3:20pm (JST) at the KFC Hall in Tokyo. In person attendance will be limited to 100 people (decided by lottery) but the tournament will also be streamed live on YouTube and Twitch.
