As fun as it is to capture monsters for a life of servitude, part of the appeal of Pokémon is that you can view them in their natural habitats. With the release of the new official Pokécology book on June 18, 2025, Pokémon fans will be able to learn about how different Pokémon cohabitate in the wild.
Unlike a regular Pokédex that provides general knowledge and battle tactics for Pokémon, The Pokémon Company’s Pokécology book focuses more on their relationship with the environment and other Pokémon. Relevant topics include Pokémon eating and sleeping habits, hibernation periods, and migration patterns – to name a few. As complex as some of these topics are, The Pokémon Company ensures that the book will contain easy-to-understand explanations so that even young readers will appreciate it.

What’s interesting about Pokécology is that while The Pokémon Company is listed as the official author, the book is written by Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrated by Chihiro Kinoshita – two University of Tokyo graduates with PHDs in veterinary behaviorism and ecology employed by the company. Yonehara has been credited for his work on Pokémon Violet, Pokémon Scarlet, and Pokémon Legends Acreus, while Kinoshita’s illustrations have been used in a variety of children’s books focused on animal ecology. With their expertise, it seems we can expect some uniquely academic insights into Pokémon behavior in Pokécology.

Pokécology is set to release on June 18, 2025. For now, it has only been announced in Japan, and the Japanese version can be pre-ordered on Amazon, Rakuten, 7net, Kinokuniya, Yodobashi, Tower Records, and HMV for 1,430 JPY (around $10 USD).
