Monster Hunter series tops 100 million units sold worldwide
The Monster Hunter series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, according to a Capcom press release on May 14.
Recent entries to the long-running action RPG series have fared particularly well, with 2021 console game Monster Hunter Rise selling over 15 million units. Its success has continued with the 2022 Sunbreak expansion, which surpassed over 8 million downloads.
Debuting on the PS2 back in 2004, the Monster Hunter series has historically been more popular in its home country, with many entries only being released in Japan. As Capcom’s press release reports, the series homed in on becoming a global brand with Monster Hunter World in 2018, which was the first entry to get a simultaneous worldwide release. Although released 6 years ago, Monster Hunter World has still been topping charts this year (with the reasons for its continued success explored in this article). In the Japanese language version of the press release in Famitsu, Capcom describes the Monster Hunter franchise as achieving “remarkable growth” in a relatively short period of time and following in Resident Evil’s footsteps in terms of global sales impact.
Anticipation is building around the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds, which is scheduled for a multi-platform release sometime in 2025. Capcom states that they intend to satisfy players’ expectations by “leveraging (their) industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences.”
Capcom experienced record-high profits for a 7th consecutive year in 2023, with their overall game sales increasing by 21% (Related Article).
