Mecha BREAK devs say a surprising number of testers spent more time beautifying their mechs than battling
Amazing Seasun Games’ online multiplayer mech battle game Mecha BREAK has been attracting attention ever since it was first announced. We caught up with the dev team at Tokyo Game Show 2024 to find out why they think the game has become so popular and what surprised them about the beta test results.
When asked what the secret is to Mecha BREAK’s popularity, the dev team commented: “We think there has always been strong demand for a high-quality sci-fi mech game” adding that “We have established a good communication cycle in which we listen to players’ valuable feedback and use it to polish the game.” They seem to be looking forward to incorporating player opinions into the rest of the game’s development- feeling that the fans inspire them.
Mecha BREAK’s closed beta test back in August grew the game’s fanbase even more, maintaining a solid average of 40,000 concurrent players (source: SteamDB). The devs revealed they were stunned by how the free-to-play game racked up over a million wishlists on Steam after the test finished, placing it in the global top 20 most wishlisted games on the platform. “This result was something we never predicted.”
It seems that player behavior was also somewhat different to what Mecha BREAK’s devs expected. Although plenty of players were getting into the 6vs6 battles, “What really surprised us is that many people were super enthusiastic about painting their mechs. Players from Asia, North America, South America and Europe were very keen to share their paintjobs, and we could really feel the passion of these mech-loving players,” the dev team commented, adding that “We were a little taken aback that some players actually spent more time decorating their mechs than playing the game.” As well as mech customization, Mecha BREAK’s extensive character creator also captured players’ attention, allowing them to customize every detail of their attractive pilots (even their butt cheeks…).
The popularity of Mecha BREAK’s customization options was evident at the TGS booth. As well as giving visitors the chance to try out the game and pose next to the humungous statue of the Narukami mech, there was also a “painting workshop” area. Here, people could try their hand at designing and painting their own mech in-game, receiving printed photos of their designs that they could take home as a souvenir. Many passionate mech fans wrote enthusiastic messages on their personalized mech snaps and stuck them on the display wall.
The Mecha BREAK devs also revealed that they are planning to hold more open and closed testing sessions prior to the full game’s release. Those who are interested should keep an eye on Mecha BREAK’s official website, X account and Steam page for more info.
Mecha BREAK is scheduled for release on PC (Steam) and consoles in 2025.
