Japanese game company Idea Factory recently announced the official release date and synopsys of its upcoming visual novel Kimi ni Madoi, Kimi ni Oboreru, developed by its women’s game label Otomate. The title, set to launch on July 30 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, will be the studio’s first romance game based on the omegaverse genre, which is quite an unexpected move coming from one of the country’s most recognized otome game developers. Additionally, it was also revealed that Re;AER, the scriptwriters of Magical Girl Witch Trials, would be handling the game’s scenario.
Back in December, when the game was officially announced, it was revealed that the story would be based on a “heterosexual omegaverse,” causing mixed reactions among both domestic and overseas fans of the genre. The biggest headscratcher was, well, how does one pull-off a “straight omegaverse” in the first place?
For those unfamiliar with the terminology, omegaverse is a subgenre of (predominantly erotic) fiction that assigns humans “secondary genders,” such as alpha, beta and omega, inspired by the popular theory of social hierarchies among wolves. Usually, alphas are dominant leaders, while omegas are submissive and fertile. But since none of the “genders” are bound by biological sex, and are equally driven by animalistic sexual instincts, omegaverse has become a staple genre in homosexual fanfiction, specifically when it comes to stories exploring the topic of “male pregnancy.”
Against this background, Kimi ni Madoi, Kimi ni Oboreru seems to take on the ruthless social dynamics of the omegaverse. The story’s protagonist is the 23-year-old Sayo Tsuyuki, who has lived her life so far without a “secondary gender,” but is suddenly told that she has been an omega all along. However, in this world, “all omegas who don’t find a mate before the age of 25 die,” and the only way to escape that fate is to mate with an alpha. So, in order to literally survive, Sayo decides to dedicate the remaining two years of her life to finding a mate. At the same time, she returns to her hometown after five long years, reuniting with some of her old childhood friends, who help her discover true love, but also ignite an “uncontrollable instinct” within her.
When it comes to the romanceable male leads, most of them are of the alpha disposition, except for the protagonist’s beta younger brother and the mysterious omegaverse researcher whose true secondary gender is unknown.
As for the sexual aspects of the game, the genre was listed as “a women’s romance visual novel,” so it is unclear if it will feature explicit content, especially considering that it is being developed primarily for the Switch. However, the official website explains that, in the world of Kimi ni Madoi, Kimi ni Oboreru, omegas do go in heat, release pheromones and have uncontrollable sexual instincts. Furthermore, the only way to become a “true mate” with an alpha and escape the fate of death is to have intercourse during the omega’s heat period, all with a neck biting ritual to bind the two for life. Considering this, it won’t be surprising if the game partially ventures into suggestive content, though it is yet to be seen to what extent that would be.
Kimi ni Madoi, Kimi ni Oboreru is set to release on July 30, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch.
