Krafton is using NVIDIA AI technology to make NPCs in its upcoming life sim inZOI behave just like real humans

Krafton plans to make its high-freedom life sim inZOI available in early access on PC (Steam) from March 28. The game will take advantage of NVIDIA technology to deliver advanced AI citizens that react to their surroundings, make their own decisions and even alter their behavior based on accumulated experiences.

In a similar vein to The Sims, inZOI will let you create your own character, build every aspect of their home, control their life and form deep relationships with other virtual people. However, inZOI NPCs will be more advanced and behave in more realistic, “human” ways.

InZOI aims to offer a “complete community simulation,” in which every character in the world acts on their own free will. Characters play an active role in the city, working and taking part in leisure activities. There will also be trends and gossip move through the world, as well as unexpected events like illnesses and accidents. Even when the player’s character is not directly involved, NPCs will still influence each other.

To shine some light on this, NVIDIA posted a YouTube video (below) giving examples of how the virtual inhabitants of inZOI (known as Zois) will behave. Apparently, the game takes advantage of NVIDIA ACE technology, which utilizes generative AI to bring characters to life.

In Krafton’s inZOI, the Smart Zoi function (which can be toggled on or off by the player) uses NVIDIA ACE. As shown in the video, when Smart Zoi is turned on, a Zoi with a caring personality will stop to buy food for a hungry NPC who appears to be in need or give directions to lost NPCs. What’s more, the Smart Zoi will learn from these experiences, influencing their future behavior. Players will also be able to see the Smart Zoi’s thoughts, potentially helping them in forming a close relationship to that Zoi with their own character.

Since its announcement, inZOI has attracted a fair bit of attention and hype for also using gen AI to automatically make clothing textures for characters and generate 3D models from photos. The YouTube video posted on January 8 shows yet another way in which cutting edge technology is being used to make inZOI a highly realistic life sim that gives the player a lot of freedom.

inZOI is scheduled for early access release on PC (Steam) on March 28.
