Japanese TV station decides to air “only the audio” of upcoming sex-island anime

The official anime adaptation of adult visual novel game Nukitashi is setting precedents in more ways than one.

In an unusual move, the Japanese TV broadcasting station Tokyo MX has decided to air only the audio of upcoming anime series Nukitashi the Animation. The anime in question is an adaptation of the adult visual novel game Nukitashi.

Produced by Kadokawa and Studio Passione (the animation studio behind the fantasy sex comedy “Interspecies Reviewers”), Nukitashi the Animation is set to start airing on July 18, 2025. Ahead of the premiere, the anime’s official X account published an official list of stations and airing times. Given the story’s adult themes (more on that further below), most TV stations will be broadcasting Nukitashi’s censored version (with the exception of AT-X, a station known for airing violent and/or suggestive anime without censorship). However, Tokyo MX will go a step further and air only the audio, a decision which has prompted much amusement and bewilderment among Japanese anime fans.

This is not the only thing about Nukitashi the Animation that’s unprecedented – back when the anime was initially announced, publisher Kadokawa suggested that it was the riskiest project in their long history of producing anime, expressing uncertainty about how it will turn out.

For context, the anime’s source material is Qruppo’s visual novel game Nukitashi (short for “What’s a Flat-Chested Girl Like Me to Do on an Island Straight Out of a Porn Game?”). The game follows a brother and sister who end up on Seiran – a sex-obsessed tropical island where residents engage in public heterosexual intercourse with everyone and anyone. Refusing to participate is prohibited by a weird police-state-like ordinance, and the brother and sister fight to dismantle the system by forming the anti-copulation resistance organization “NLNS.”

At the time of writing, Nukitashi is Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam with over 2,000 user reviews. But given the premise, it’s not hard to imagine why the game’s anime adaptation will be censored on most Japanese TV stations and reduced to nothing but audio on Tokyo MX.

Nukitashi the Animation starts airing starting July 18, 2025. OceanVeil will exclusively stream both the censored and uncensored versions for international audiences.
