Japanese solo developer’s “unscary” schoolgirl horror adventure game crowdfunds over 1 million yen in less than three months

Japanese solo developer Ichijo Lilili announced that Obake Nante Kowakunai JK VS Gakkou Meikyuu reached 100% of its crowdfunding goal.

Japanese solo developer Ichijo Lilili recently announced that they had reached 100% of the crowdfunding goal for their horror adventure game Obake Nante Kowakunai JK VS Gakkou Meikyuu (A Highschool Girl Who Ain’t Scared of Ghosts VS School Labyrinth; unofficial translation), scheduled to release on Steam in the first quarter of 2027. With the CAMPFIRE campaign ending on April 3, the developer has also revealed new stretch goals, including additions of new characters and potential multi-language support.

As reported by Game*Spark, the campaign, which launched on January 16 this year, managed to raise over a million yen (about $6k USD) in less than three months, with over a hundred backers. At the time of writing, the game collected over 1,046,000 yen, and is steadily heading towards its next stretch goal at 1,200,000 yen (addition of a support character).

Obake Nante Kowakunai JK VS Gakkou Meikyuu is a side-scrolling adventure with puzzles and light action elements, all packaged into a cute pixel art style. And while the “horror” tag might turn off those who are easily scared, the author, who isn’t good with horror themselves, assures players that they made the game for people who are “interested in horror, but don’t like scary stuff,” fittingly calling it an “unscary horror game.”

After their classmate Arisa mysteriously disappears, four high school girls are also lost without a trace, and you will be tasked with rescuing them from within the dark school. However, all of the girls are bearing a darkness hidden in their hearts. Sometimes they hurt each other, but sometimes, they might try to get you. The game features multiple endings, and each run can be completed in around 10 minutes.

While there is currently no English support, given that one of the stretch goals of the crowdfunding campaign was “global expansion,” in seems like Ichijo has a positive attitude towards releasing multi-language support for their game in the future.

Obake Nante Kowakunai JK VS Gakkou Meikyuu is set to release in 2027 for PC (Steam).
