Hideo Kojima says OD is something completely different from a standard horror game. “We still don’t know if it will work out”

Commenting on his upcoming horror game OD, Kojima Hideo says "I can't say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out."

While the world eagerly awaits new information on Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror game OD, director, producer, lead writer, and designer Hideo Kojima says it will be unlike anything the genre has seen so far. In addition, the Knock Teaser Trailer, which was released in September this year, already contains some hints on how the game will actually work.

Speaking to ananweb in a recent interview, Kojima described OD as something completely different from what standard horror games offer.

I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out. We’ve created stealth games and delivery games which were unlike anything before, but system-wise, they were similar to other games. This time, we’re trying to change the service model from the ground up, so it should be quite challenging. We’ve packed the trailer full of hints, so if you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out.

The stealth and delivery-based titles Kojima is referring to are, of course, the Metal Gear titles and Death Stranding 1 and 2 respectively. While the games are unique thanks to Kojima’s worldbuilding and storytelling, they borrow gameplay elements from other titles. To give an example, Death Stranding’s building elements are somewhat similar to those found in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Although OD’s Knock teaser suggests it may be similar to a conventional first-person horror game like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Kojima’s statement suggests otherwise. Let’s not forget how he fooled everyone into thinking Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was a first-person shooter with the game’s Tokyo Game Show 2005 trailer

OD is currently in development by Kojima Productions and published by Xbox Game Studios.
