Hideo Kojima has “mixed feelings” about Metal Gear Solid’s 26th anniversary
It may be hard to believe for PlayStation 1 owners, but Metal Gear Solid was released 26 years ago today on September 3, 1998. Series creator Hideo Kojima took to X to express his thoughts on the anniversary.
The first 3D entry in Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid would take the gaming world by storm. Featuring full voice acting (which was still a rarity back in the PS1 days), Metal Gear Solid also boasted a strong sense of cinematic style and stealth gameplay that proved a refreshing change from the standard “shoot everything.” Even today, the game’s bluey-green tinged 3D graphics and haunting music give a strong sense of being stuck on an enemy-occupied Alaskan military base in the middle of nowhere. Its memorable characters, set-piece boss battles, poignant moments and story packed full of twists has helped it to remain a must-play classic.
Hideo Kojima mentions that he has “mixed feelings” about the anniversary, perhaps due to what happened with Konami’s 2015 reorganization. However, he also expressed how long it has been since MGS was released and how times have changed. Snake’s Japanese actor Akio Otsuka retweeted Kojima’s post, commenting that the release of Metal Gear Solid “Felt like the distant past.”
September is a big birthday month for the MGS series as not only does Metal Gear Solid turn 26 on September 3rd but yesterday, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain marked 9 years since its release.
