The development team behind Sega and Colorful Palette’s mobile rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage announced on November 28 that the game will be updating its guidelines on fan etiquette. As reported by Otaku Soken, the update was made to address the conduct of fans in online spaces, warning against the use of “invalidating language.”
While the guidelines prohibit the usual stuff like offensive language, in-game bullying and insults, they also urge users not to write hateful or negative comments about the in-game characters they dislike. Some of the examples of “invalidating language towards characters” listed on the game’s official website include the following:
“[Character A]’s singing is mid.”
“I get so annoyed when [Character A] is together with [Character B].”
“Fans of [Character A] are annoying so you’re better off not interacting with them.”
The new additions to the guidelines include warnings against making hateful comments towards the music, illustrations and other forms of in-game (or fan) content that do not match your personal views or headcanons. Furthermore, players are urged to be mindful not to write comments or posts that read as taking a dismissive stance towards characters and the opinions of others. Statements like “This is not what [Character A] fans wanted,” “I just want to look at [Character A],” “I want [Character B] to disappear,” are listed as examples of what not to do.

As explained by the developers, “Different people like different characters and content, and anybody will get hurt if somebody invalidates those feelings. When you write something in places where a lot of people can see your comment, we ask you to double-check if the comment doesn’t come off as too judgmental or invalidating before posting.”
If anyone is caught making such comments on the game’s official X account or YouTube channel, the developers warn the person might be blocked or muted.
