Ghost in the Shell and Bayonetta voice actress Atsuko Tanaka dies at 61

Anime fans have lost a prolific talent as voice actress Atsuko Tanaka passed away on August 20, 2024 at the age of 61. Tanaka, best known for her role as the Japanese voice of Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, died after battling an undisclosed illness for one year. Her death was announced publicly by her son Hikaru Tanaka (who is also a voice actor) and her agency, Mausu Promotion.

Mausu Promotion stated that “Atsuko Tanaka has died at 61 years old. She was undergoing medical treatment for an illness, however treatment proved ineffective and she passed away on August 20, 2024. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the kindness she showed during her lifetime. “

Hikaru Tanaka’s announcement on X publicly revealed that he was related to Atsuko Tanaka for the first time. The touching tribute thanked those who supported his mother’s work- including fans and industry professionals. Hikaru mentioned that although his mother battled against illness for a year, she lived true to herself during this time. “I am truly happy to have a mother who I am this proud of.” he stated, adding: “Please don’t forget the works that Atsuko Tanaka earnestly took part in, the characters that she poured love into, and her voice. With love to my beloved mother, the respected actress and V.A.”

Aside from Motoko Kusanagi, Tanaka also voiced Sulan in the 1997 Berserk anime, Lisa Lisa in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Bayonetta in Platinum Games’ Bayonetta franchise. Her more recent works include voicing Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, Sirene in Devilman Crybaby, and Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. While Tanaka mostly voiced heroines and motherly figures, her wide range allowed her to take on villainous roles as well. There has been an outpouring of sorrow from anime and game communities who were touched by her performances.
