Back in December last year, Genshin Impact held a rather oddball collaboration with the language learning app Duolingo. Featuring Paimon, Tighnari, Cyno and the infamous green owl Duo, the special event quests allowed players to gain special in-game rewards (including the dubious-looking green “fried chicken”) by extending their language learning streaks in the app. According to a data report by mobile market researcher Sensor Tower, the limited-time collaboration made daily downloads of Duolingo soar in Japan, breaking the app’s yearly download record (source: Otaku Soken).
As per Sensor Tower’s data, Duolingo has been witnessing steady growth in Japan throughout the past five years, with 2025 seeing the highest number of downloads. Specifically, Duolingo achieved over 4.5 million downloads in 2025, which is more than double the number of downloads recorded in 2021 (1.9 million).
Moreover, on December 7, 2025, one day before the launch of the Genshin Impact collaboration, Sensor Tower recorded a significant spike in the app’s downloads in Japan. This marked the highest daily download count for Duolingo throughout the whole year, and while 2025’s daily download graph suggests a slight downward trend in the country, it seems that the unprecedented Genshin collab managed to significantly contribute to the overall 4.5 million download count.
