A single-word X post by Square Enix was all it took to get Final Fantasy X fans hyped about the much-beloved franchise. While this doesn’t confirm that a Final Fantasy X remaster, remake, or sequel is in the works, fans were keen to express their love for Yuna, Tidus, as well as the other characters and world of Spira.
The word “YUNA” in the post refers to the playable character in Final Fantasy X and the main protagonist of Final Fantasy X-2. Starting as a Summoner, Yuna left Besaid on a pilgrimage to Zanarkand to defeat the beast Sin. After beating Sin, Yuna traded her Summoner robes and became a Sphere Hunter.Yuna’s gradual transformation from timid Summoner to confident adventurer is one of the main focal points of the Final Fantasy X/X-2 universe, which is why so many players are invested in her character (some would even go so far as to name their cat after her).
Amidst numerous uses of the “Stay away from the summoner!” meme, fans also expressed their hopes for another Final Fantasy X remake. Some took things a step further and hypothesized that the post is a Final Fantasy X-3 announcement in disguise.
As great as it would be to revisit the world of Spira again, game companies and developers like to express their love for video games just as much as anyone else. Masahiro Sakurai’s one-syllable excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2, for instance, drew widespread attention and fan requests for Super Smash Bros. characters. Square Enix’s X post is likely a similar instance of people in the game industry being excited about their games and characters.
