Residents and tourists in Japan who are fans of classic Final Fantasy games have yet another reason to visit Tokyo, as Square Enix is showing a limited-time movie along the south exit ticket gates of JR Shinjuku station and in the station’s East-West passage (source: Famitsu). The movie, which showcases graphics, music, and art from Final Fantasy I-VI on massive screens, runs from August 14-18, 2024, and captures the charm of Final Fantasy before Cloud, Squall, and the rest of the 3D cast cemented it as a triple-A franchise.
A lot of the footage used in the movie comes from Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster – a remastered collection that features redrawn 2D-pixel graphics, newly arranged music overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu, Yoshitaka Amano’s distinct character artwork, and much more. A new physical anniversary edition of the collection, aptly dubbed Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition is slated for worldwide release on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on October 8, 2024. As that is still a few months away, fans who are in Tokyo this week can bask in Final Fantasy nostalgia by watching the Shinjuku movie instead.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster got a physical release on console last year, however copies quickly sold out. This led to it becoming something of a collectors’ item, with the price of second-hand copies soaring. It seems likely that the Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition will also be sought after by fans.
Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition will be released on October 8 for Nintendo Switch and PS4.
