Update: Solution found
In typical FromSoftware fashion, Elden Ring Nightreign includes several items with descriptions that feel almost intentionally vague. One of these items, the Cord End, has players searching Limveld high and low to find out what it’s for.
Found in containers, on defeated enemies, and the ground in various areas (particularly churches and shrines), the Cord End’s random spawning nature and legendary rarity already register it as a mystery worth solving. But it’s the Cord End’s general item description – “Gain entry somewhere” that has players really curious, as it suggests that the item could lead to an undiscovered location.

When examined, the Cord End’s full description reads “A carefully woven cord. This cord belonged to the young girls who were housed in a place that was meant as an eternal secret. The cutting-gifted tribe vowed to sacrifice their flesh while concealing the truth. But the girls were too young to oblige.” As the full item description is about as useful as Elden Ring Nightreign’s lack of in-game voice chat, countless theories have emerged regarding the Cord End’s use.
One Reddit user thinks the Cord End should be used in an area after defeating the final Nightlord. Many theorize that it can be used to open one of many seemingly closed doors or sealed walls in Limveld. While there are many theories, none have been proven correct so far.

The only other “cord” item in Elden Ring Nightreign is the Torn Braided Cord, which is a reward for completing the Raider’s unique Remembrance Quest. But while the Cord End is a consumable that takes up one of your item slots (thus possibly making it more valuable), the Torn Braided Cord starts as a key item before being turned into a relic.
Given Elden Ring Nightreign was produced by FromSoftware, some have tried reading the Cord End’s item description in its original Japanese text. However, doing so reveals an almost verbatim translation of the English translation. Many Japanese players are also on the hunt, with several searches for “Cord End” on X coming up with nothing.
While previous FromSoftware games include useless items (Dark Souls’ Pendant being one of the more infamous ones), the Cord End’s strangely specific description could hint at something at the end of the rabbit hole. Given the power of the Internet and some time, perhaps this mystery will be solved sooner than later.
Elden Ring NIGHTREIGN is available for PC (Steam), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
