Dragon Quest creator working on new friendship-wrecking game with Blue Lock manga author

With Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii is supervising the development of the new board-game inspired title Reincarnation Game.

Japanese game studio Any announced that it will be collaborating with ArtePiazza to develop a new Nintendo Switch project tentatively titled “Reincarnation Game” (jp: Tensei Game). Billed as a “friendship-testing” game, Reincarnation Game features a star-studded development team, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii as an advisor, manga writer Muneyuki Kaneshiro (Blue Lock, As The Gods Will, Jagaaan) in charge of game design and concepts, ArtePiazza CEO Shintaro Mashima as art director, and Any CEO Ayaka Sato as game director.

Based on Sugoroku, a Japanese board game similar to Snakes and Ladders, Reincarnation Game is set in the world of Rinnekai (literally “World of Reincarnation”).  In Rinnekai, you will use gameplay elements such as Karma to obstruct, knock down, and otherwise sabotage others’ chances of winning. The gameplay gets more heated the closer you get to victory, further increasing the chances of damaging your relationships with fellow players. As Sugoroku is typically played with friends, Reincarnation Game looks to be in the same vein as relationship-straining titles like Overcooked and Among Us

The themes of Reincarnation Game are reincarnation (obviously), karma, and destiny. According to Yuji Horii, he joined the project because he wanted to contribute to Reincarnation Game’s unique gameplay loop. Muneyuki Kaneshiro joined for similar reasons, revealing that it was he who came up with the game’s themes. While Reincarnation Game is still in early development, the team behind the title is ecstatic about creating a fun party title that players will enjoy and argue about.

Reincarnation Game is set to release sometime in 2026 for the Nintendo Switch. Aside from the game, Any is also planning to expand Reincarnation Game into different forms such as anime, merchandise, events, and TikTok content.
