Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake’s developer was silently changed after its initial announcement
During the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast, Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake (Dragon Quest 3 hereafter) will be releasing on November 14 this year. The title was initially announced as a joint effort between Square Enix’s Team Asano and Amata Games, but it seems this has changed in the meantime.
As per the announcement from May 2021, Dragon Quest 3 was originally supposed to be developed by Tomoya Asano’s Team Asano, which has worked on a variety of “HD-2D” titles (including Octopath Traveler) and Amata Games, a company active in game publishing and the development of VR titles. After three years without any official updates on Dragon Quest 3’s status (yesterday, Team Asano commented that they regret making the initial announcement so early), the game’s release date has finally been announced, but the newly revealed official homepage states that it is being developed by Team Asano and Artdink.
Artdink is known as the developer of the A-Train series, and they have previously collaborated with Square Enix’s Team Asano for the 2022 TRPG Triangle Strategy. In addition, it seems Artdink will also be working on the development of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake alongside Team Asano, as per the Steam store page.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is scheduled to launch on November 14 for the PC (Microsoft Store), Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Steam version will be released on November 15.
Artdink has always had a good record of game development. I am glad they are assisting with this series and had a hand in Triangle Strategy. That was a good title.
