Toby Fox is never afraid to get weird with his games, and the new Rock Band-type minigame in the upcoming Deltarune Chapters 1-4 is proof of this. Set to appear in Chapter 4, main protagonists Kris, Susie, and Ralsei will be trading their weapons and battle garb for musical instruments, a microphone, and more glam rock and punk-inspired clothing.
Unlike the rhythm games that inspired it, Fox says that players won’t have to worry about their hand-eye coordination for this particular Deltarune minigame. Constantly playing the minigame will allow you to finish it, which could mean that there is a humorous cutscene that plays if you fail enough times. This isn’t the first time the Rock Band-type minigame was introduced, as the Nintendo Switch 2 Announce Trailer briefly showed it in action.
Fox admits that while he and the team tried their best to make the lyrics work with the song, they more or less cannot be read while playing the minigame. As Deltarune characters talk almost exclusively using beeps and boops, players have to rely on subtitles to understand what they are saying.
As a final note, Fox hints that there could be more minigames in addition to the Rock Band-type one in Deltarune Chapters 1-4. Considering fans waited almost four years for the new chapters, new and unexpected additions to the game seem much appreciated.
Deltarune Chapters 1-4 is set to release on June 5 for Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PC (macOS and Windows), and PlayStation 4 and 5.
