Dark kung-fu action RPG Phantom Blade Zero releases in September 2026 for PC and PS5

Neither fully soulslike nor hack-and-slash, Phantom Blade Zero is a deep wuxia-inspired action RPG coming from China.

Chinese developer S-GAME announced during The Game Awards 2025 that Phantom Blade Zero will launch on September 9, 2025 for PS5 and PC. The respective store pages were also released along with the announcement.

Another high-budget title coming from China in the footsteps of Black Myth: Wukong, Phantom Blade Zero is a wuxia-inspired, dark martial arts action RPG that’s neither fully soulslike nor hack-and-slash. The story follows a swordsman with only sixty-six days left to live. After being falsely accused of murdering his own master and suffering a serious heart injury, he races through bloody battlefields, fending off assassins and foiling conspiracies.

Gameplay revolves around stylish swordplay battles, with a combat system described as easy to learn, but hard to master. The swordsman can perform combo attacks using successive strikes, and can obtain up to thirty weapon types by defeating powerful enemies. These can be mixed and matched with twenty “Phantom Edges” to suit different playstyles.

Built in Unreal Engine 5, Phantom Blade Zero uses “state-of-the-art motion capture” to recreate the feel of golden-age Hong Kong martial arts cinema. The aesthetic of the game, however, adds a unique cyberpunk/steampunk twist.
