Danganronpa creator says his upcoming new RPG has so much content you might be put off

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, Danganronpa series creator Kazutaka Kodaka hosted a special program dedicated to Too Kyoo Games and Media.Vision’s upcoming new tactical RPG The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, showcasing the title’s gameplay. Slated for an April 23 release next year, The Hundred Line is Kodaka’s long-awaited passion project. The title is being co-directed by Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi, making it a very exciting collaboration for fans of both creators.

Kodaka has previously mentioned that The Hundred Line’s scale suddenly expanded mid-development as the team realized they wouldn’t be able to achieve everything they set out for if they kept things small. While this meant financial struggle for Too Kyoo Games, it also means players are in for a tremendous amount of content. When asked about the upcoming game’s volume at TGS, Kodaka amusingly commented, “When games are too long, players can get put off, so we’re trying not to talk about it too much,” suggesting a considerable volume of content that the developers are “hiding.”

In The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, you spend 100 days at the titular academy fending off freakish monsters. Aside from the main story, the game contains TRPG-style battles against waves of enemies as well as free exploration sections where you can move around the academy and talk to other students to create bonds. Your 100 days at Last Defense Academy contain various sub events, and given that the game will come with a cast of 15 playable characters and a finely branching story based on your choices, we can see why Kodaka considers the volume potentially intimidating for players. From what we’ve seen, the game also includes (as one would expect from its creators) a significant amount of text, as well as animated movie scenes throughout.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is scheduled to launch on April 23, 2025 for the PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
