Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s unique tale of sorrow and grief has captivated people worldwide, thanks in no small part to its ensemble of voice and motion capture actors. While some actors worked tirelessly to bring the game’s characters to life, others barely had to lift a finger.
Maxence Cazorla – the motion capture actor for Gustave, Verso, and Renoir, as well as the English voice of Esquie – just revealed the motion capture actor for François. Esquie’s next-door neighbor and “friend,” François is a turtle who supposedly holds one of the rocks that grants Esquie the ability to swim. Since François can hardly move, who better to provide motion capture for the character than a water bottle?
While it can be argued that just about any inanimate object can play François, the water bottle used in the performance capture was just the right height to serve as a placeholder for the character. Cazorla (who plays Gustave), Charlotte Hoepffner (Maelle’s motion capture actor), and Estelle Darnault (Lune’s motion capture actor) were able to keep their eyes focused on “François” for the entire scene thanks to the water bottle, thankfully before Hoepffner starts to break out into laughter.

Despite not having a wide range of motions, François is one of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s most animated characters. This is thanks in no small part to Rich Keeble, who also provides the voice of Monoco and some other characters in the game. François’s often loud and witty way of speaking to others may seem annoying at first, but his rough exterior hides a sensitive soul underneath.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S.
