Capcom still sees Mega Man as an important IP, and is considering new games

Capcom recently assured people (most notably its shareholders) that the beloved Mega Man franchise remains a priority. When asked about the series in a shareholders’ Q&A, Capcom explained that the company is often thinking about how to develop new games for the iconic, arm-cannon wielding android.

“Question: Please tell me what plans you have for the Mega Man series.

Answer: Mega Man is one of our highly-valued IPs and we are considering how to create games for it on an ongoing basis.”

The Mega Man franchise has a storied history as one of Capcom’s oldest IPs, spanning over 50 games. The first game, a side-scrolling action platformer simply titled Mega Man (or Rockman, if you prefer the original Japanese name) initially released on the Famicom/NES in 1987. The most recent spin-off title, Mega Man X DiVE, was a mobile game that first came out on March 24, 2020, before being ported over to iOS, Android, and PC via Steam as Mega Man X DiVE Offline. Mega Man X DiVE’s global services for the mobile version were only discontinued recently on June 30, 2024.

Mega Man has popped up in a variety of genres in the past. His tactical action RPG outings were re-released last year in The Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The physical copies of these remastered collections sold so well in Japan that Capcom ended up increasing production

Now that fans know that Capcom is contemplating making new Mega Man games, they are sure to discuss where the franchise should head next. It has been quite some time since a mainline Mega Man title was released (Mega Man 11 came out six years ago, to be exact). Considering Mega Man’s enduring popularity and Capcom’s track record for revitalizing classic IPs, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mega Man got a mainline sequel in the near future.
