Capcom responds to inquiry about lowering PC game prices in emerging countries

Following the announcement of its financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year (April 1 to June 30, 2024), Capcom held a Q&A conference call with shareholders. Among the topics discussed were PC game sales and the possibility of game prices being lowered in certain countries as a way to encourage more sales. 

Citing the fact that PC games account for over 50% of Capcom’s video game sales, shareholders proposed a potential strategy of lowering prices in emerging markets to secure higher revenues. In response, Capcom’s representatives did not seem convinced that this would be effective. 

“It’s difficult to say, but in emerging countries and other regions, there is a tendency for console titles that are two or three generations old to be played the most. To comfortably play the latest games, released during the past few years, you need a PC with specifications equivalent to the latest consoles, so we expect it to take some time before these titles can be played.” 

Now, Capcom is no stranger to lowering their prices, especially if it’s in the form of temporary discounts – the publisher’s “basic strategy” for pricing new full-price games includes slashing price tags to $10 or even $5 within five years, as highlighted by GamesRadar. However, when it comes to boosting PC game sales, it seems Capcom is seeking to improve their presence in different regions through marketing, not just attractive pricing.

“We expect to be able to increase PC sales not only through GDP and pricing measures, but also by implementing detailed long-term marketing strategies and promotional measures to appeal to the core PC users.”

  1. Makes sense to market their older titles as they will run on anything at this point. Plus they are already at a reasonable price point anyways.
