In addition to hardware manufacturing defects, potential Nintendo Switch 2 buyers also need to be wary of unusable second-hand consoles due to online service lockouts. Though these lockouts are Nintendo’s way of preventing piracy and modded consoles, they also raise the issue of the Switch 2’s longevity.
A Reddit user recently reported that the second-hand Switch 2 they bought from Walmart for $50 USD off was bricked. An error code marked 2124-4508 showed up when it was turned on, indicating that the console was permanently banned from accessing the Internet and any of Nintendo’s online services. Since most modern games require online connectivity for updates or to play them, the Switch 2 in question was rendered effectively useless.

According to Nintendo Support, the error indicates a breach in the user license agreement. This means that the Switch 2 was tampered with (such as using a MIG Switch flash cart to store multiple games) or a similar violation in the Code of Conduct. Considering the error is tied to the Switch 2 and not the user account, this issue cannot be remedied by resetting the console.
While the Reddit user was able to return the Switch 2 and get a refund, not everyone who buys a used console might be so lucky. As time passes and the Switch 2 becomes more affordable, perhaps people will be more inclined to purchase one brand-new. But given the current demand and shortage of the console, it would be best to check if the Switch 2 you want to buy (new or used) is in working order before purchasing it.
