Bandai Namco’s unsuccessful MMORPG Blue Protocol to be reincarnated as Star Resonance by Chinese studio

Tencent-funded Chinese developer BOKURA (Shanghai Bokura Technology) has officially announced the new MMORPG Star Resonance for PC and mobile platforms. A trailer showcasing the upcoming title’s character creator, world, battles and social gameplay elements was released on December 6.

If the visuals and setting look awfully familiar, that’s because Star Resonance is based on Bandai Namco’s anime MMORPG Blue Protocol. Published by the soon-to-be dissolved Bandai Namco Online, Blue Protocol launched in June 2023, but due to its lackluster performance, it’s scheduled to be discontinued as soon as January next year in Japan, and its global release has been cancelled.

Back to the topic of Star Resonance, its developer BOKURA had previously announced that it would be collaborating with Project Sky Blue (Blue Protocol’s dedicated development team) on a mobile game based on Blue Protocol. After Blue Protocol’s discontinuation was announced, the fate of this in-development mobile spin-off was unclear.

However, it seems that work on Star Resonance is fully on track, as preparations are already underway for a closed beta test for Chinese users (applications are being accepted from December 6 to December 19). The game will launch on both PC and mobile platforms with crossplay supported. According to BOKURA’s website, the development team is experienced in developing ARPG/MORPG/MMORPG games.

Star Resonance appears to be set in Regnas, the world of Blue Protocol, but with significantly redesigned and reworked gameplay and story. So far, there have been no announcements about the game’s release date and potential global launch.
