Azur Lane voice actress burst out laughing when told to “please act more erotic” during recording sessions

The Japanese voice actress behind Azur Lane's new SSR character Pearl has a track record in eroge and audio content.

Azur Lane’s pivot to increasingly bold fanservice apparently doesn’t just include more revealing costumes and animations. According to voice actor Narumi Aisaka, who plays newcomer Pearl, it also involves making the characters sound sexier.

In a recent X post, Aisaka reveals that she was told by her Azur Lane voice director to up the sexiness during her recording sessions for Pearl. As Narumi’s voice acting portfolio primarily consists of adult visual novel games and doujin audio works, it seems the director was hoping she could channel some of the sexiness of her previous projects into the now 18+ rated game. It’s worth noting that while Azur Lane does not include actual explicit scenes or dialogue, it often seems to be a hair away from obscene.

When recording for Pearl, I was given direction along the lines of “Since it’s you, could you please make it sound more erotic?” I burst out laughing. I’ll probably never forget that.

On top of Pearl’s already suggestive default appearance and sexy voice, her L2D+ costume (NSFW warning) is one of eight new special Halloween-themed outfits that will be included in the latest event. The costume comes with its own set of voice lines, which Narumi provided as well.

While the girls in Azur Lane are based on real World War 2 warships (this is why they are called “Ships”), there don’t seem to be any restrictions when it comes to how they are depicted in-game or in fanart. Unlike Umamusume’s horse girls, for which Cygames has established a strict code of conduct for derivative works, Yostar doesn’t seem worried about how the developers at Shanghai Manjuu and Xiamen Yongshi handle Azur Lane’s fanservice.

Azur Lane is available for Android and iOS.
