A new RPG Maker project is in the works that will allow “deeper expression.” Teaser showcases HD-2D style graphics

Gotcha Gotcha Games has announced that there's a new PRG Maker game development tool currently in the works.

Gotcha Gotcha Games has announced that a brand-new project in the RPG Maker series is currently in development. The studio dropped a teaser trailer and launched an official X account for the project on March 26.

The RPG Maker series is a line of game development tools that allow users to create games even without extensive knowledge of programming. The series began in 1990 with the release of RPG Construction Tool Dante, which set the foundations for 1992’s RPG Tsukūru Dante 98. Since then, numerous entries for both PC and console game development have been released, including the popular RPG Maker 2000. The latest entry in the series was 2023’s RPG Maker Unite, which functions as an asset for the Unity game engine. A defining feature of the RPG Maker franchise is the wide range of artistic expression it allows, with popular games like IB, Yume Nikki and Omori being developed with it.

Now, RPG Maker seems to be getting ready to welcome a new edition. The teaser trailer for the work-in-progress project looks back on the series’ history before offering a glimpse at what seems to be gameplay created in the new tool. The map and characters have a distinct “RPG Maker” feel to them, but are depicted in a HD-2D style, combining 3D space and pixel art. The lighting and shadow effects give the graphics a richer look than in previous entries.

RPG Maker new project

According to the press release, this new project by Gotcha Gotcha Games is “set to open the door to new forms of expression.” This could mean we’re getting a tool that allows development of HD-2D style games, but the exact details are yet to come.

For future updates about the new RPG Maker project, it might be good to keep an eye on the official X account
