It hasn’t been two weeks since the Nintendo Switch 2‘s release, but a couple of users are already reporting premature issues with their consoles. While the Joy-Con 2’s pinching problem can be solved by simply being careful when using them, the unwanted expansion of the Switch 2’s back panel is a more pressing matter.
A Japanese Switch 2 owner reported that the left side back panel of their console was starting to come off after two days of using the console. As expanded panels in devices are often caused by the swelling of the lithium-ion battery, this is thought to be the cause.

Another user over on Reddit shared that their brand-new Switch 2’s back panel was already bulging in the lower center portion as soon as they took it out of the box. After contacting Nintendo, the company confirmed that it may be a swollen battery and opened an investigative case. Nintendo then asked for the console to be returned, as the swollen battery pack could become a potential fire hazard.
While the swelling of a lithium-ion battery is a common occurrence, it usually presents itself after years of usage. As the Switch 2 hasn’t even been out commercially for a month, this is a cause for concern. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the console’s battery is nowhere near the back panel expansion areas of the two bulging Switch 2 reports. If this is the case, then this could be a manufacturing error on Nintendo’s part. If you own a Nintendo Switch 2, be sure to check every part of your console and report any issues immediately.
