Squinting at tiny text or even at hard-to-read text/background color combinations can make it hard to play your favorite game. Seiji Nakamura, an 83-year-old gamer and huge fan of the FPS series STALKER ran into this frustrating issue when trying to play the long-awaited STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The below post on X generated overjoyed comments that Nakamura was still gaming well into his 80s, as well as various tips for making the game more visible.
Seiji Nakamura (also known by the nickname Hal), is not just an enthusiastic gamer who names Hideo Kojima’s Snatcher among his favorites. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl
A survival horror FPS made by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, STALKER is set in the real-life Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, but imagines an alternate reality where a second disaster took place at the nuclear power plant in 2006. The latest game, STALKER. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was initially slated for a 2012 release before suffering multiple delays. It finally came out on November 20, 2024.
Given his well-documented love of the STALKER series, it seems Nakamura was all hyped up for the long-awaited release of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl last month. Although he seems to be enjoying the game, the small text turned out to be an issue.
Commenters responding to the X post mentioned a mod to make the subtitles bigger, although according to the reply from the original poster, it seems that Nakamura would like a mod that addresses the UI and menu text size too. Others suggested he get a bigger monitor.
Text in games being too small has been a hot topic in Japan lately, regarding the top-selling Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake. Many players took to X to complain that the text, especially in the Switch version, was rather hard to read (Related article). Hopefully, these issues will be resolved by patches or mods.
