Reynatis will feature lots of real-life stores in Shibuya which even Persona and Ghostwire: Tokyo couldn’t include

FuRyu released new information about REYNATIS on February 26. The upcoming title will realistically recreate the modern-day Shibuya area of Tokyo, Japan, including the Scramble Crossing, Dōgenzaka Street, and the town’s commercial facilities. Reynatis is scheduled for release on July 25 for the PS5/PS4 and Nintendo Switch, with a PC (Steam) version to follow.

Reynatis is an action RPG set in a world where magic exists and those who can use it are oppressed by society. The story takes place in Shibuya, Tokyo in the year 2024. Wizards, who are a minority, are considered dangerous by the general public and forced to live in seclusion, and the anti-magic law imposes a nighttime curfew on people.

Marin Kirizumi, one of the protagonists of Reynatis, is a 19-year-old college student who awoke to the power of magic after a car accident. Since becoming a wizard, he has lived in oppression. Relying on his father’s words that becoming the strongest will lead him to liberation, Marin visits Shibuya to gain freedom. The other main character, Sari Nishijima, is a former police officer who wandered between life and death before awakening to magic. She decides to use her powers for the sake of order, and as a member of the Magical Task Force, she is involved in the control of illegal activity of wizards. Reynatis starts with the encounter of Marin, who seeks liberation, and Sari, who sees the suppression of wizards as justice.

In the game, the two protagonists can switch between a “Suppressed” and “Liberated” mode when fighting enemies. In the Suppressed mode, you cannot launch attacks, but can evade any attack. In the Liberated mode, you are defenseless but can unleash attacks at once. Strategy will revolve around switching between these modes to defeat enemies. Reynatis was developed by Japanese developer NatsumeAtari, and its scenario was written by Kazunari Nojima.

It seems that particular attention to detail has gone into realistically recreating the setting of the game – the modern-day Shibuya area in Japan’s capital. According to the press release, Reynatis will feature many famous landmarks, such as the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, Shibuya Center-Gai, and Dōgenzaka Street (where the Statue of Hachiko is located). In addition, famous Japanese commercial facilities and stores, including SHIBUYA 109, will appear in the city with their real-life names. The realistic reproduction of Shibuya seems to be one of the selling-points of this game.

From the published screenshots and images, many well-known Japanese and international brands can be seen, such as Bic Camera, Gusto, Ichiran, Murasaki Sports, ABC-MART, TSUTAYA, and Adidas. Although a few obvious parodies of real-life brands can be seen, a lot of them are represented as is, which means the developers went through a lot of one-by-one negotiations to achieve a high-level of accuracy. A post by the official Reynatis X account mentions receiving cooperation from various stores and brands.
