Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – glowing worm boi becomes main attraction of DLC
FromSoftware released the trailer and latest information about the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on February 22. Of all the teased upcoming content, a mysterious worm-like creature has won over the community, earning loving nicknames such as “glowy worm boi” and “spirit noodle.”
Shadow of the Erdtree is an upcoming Elden Ring expansion that players have been anticipating for a long time. The story is set on a new map, the Land of Shadow, which is physically separated from the existing Lands Between. While showing another side of the original game’s lore, the DLC will feature many new aspects – such as the mysterious character Messmer who was revealed in the latest trailer, leaving many Elden Ring fans speculating.
But another new character (or creature) that was silently revealed on the official Elden Ring website via screenshots, seems to have taken away the spotlight entirely – receiving fanart, memes and boundless affection.
The screenshot depicts an earthworm-like creature glowing blue in the forest at night. The top of the worm is designed to look like a face, made up of three black holes, and short wiggly arms can be seen below it. Also striking are the multiple thread-like strands coming from its body and fluttering in the air.
Although it has not appeared in any trailers and its name and identity are completely unknown, its endearing appearance has earned it the nickname “mystery worm” among Japanese players and variations of “glowy worm” among international fans. The spirit noodle has since inspired fan animations, illustrations and even Armored Core 6 decals with its likeness.
Since nothing is known about it save for its cute and kind of eerie appearance, Elden Ring players have naturally begun to theorize about the worm boi, and many have expressed reluctance to potentially attack it if the setting so required. Others have proposed that the creature may be hiding a terrifying secret, such as a huge full form hidden beneath the ground. Its real identity has become a highly anticipated part of the DLC.
FromSoftware titles have featured many characters and enemies that have won players’ hearts in similar ways. For example, Mushroom People and the characters wearing Catarina Armor the Dark Souls series, as well as the pot guy (Iron Fist Alexander) and Oracle Envoys in Elden Ring. This time, it’s the mysterious glowing worm stealing the spotlight, and it remains to be seen if we will be getting exactly what we see with it – a glow in the dark noodle idly sticking out of the ground, or if, perhaps, there might be some deeper secret to it.
The Elden Ring DLC “Shadow of the Erdtree ” is scheduled for release on June 21 for the PC (Steam), PS4/PS5 and Xbox series X|S/Xbox One.
