Ace Attorney art director reveals most popular characters based on Valentine’s Day haul

Ace Attorney art director Kazuya Nuri recently took to X to thank fans for all the Valentine’s Day chocolate sent to the characters from The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. In the thread posted on February 19, he also revealed a very extensive list of the top 8 ranking characters from the Ace Attorney series spin-off in terms of how many gifts they received.

Post translation: Sorry for my late thank you message. This year too, we received a lot of gifts and messages filled with passion for characters from The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Thank you! We also got many messages regarding other games in the Ace Attorney series and staff. I am also grateful for the many messages asking how I am doing. As always, thank you very much! To continue…

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles was released in 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.  It is a compilation containing the two games from Capcom’s courtroom drama spin-off series, namely The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures (2015) and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve (2017), which were previously only available on Nintendo 3DS and mobile platforms. It is set loosely around the late 1800s and early 1900s in England and Japan, featuring a plethora of amusingly named British and Japanese caricatures.

Valentine’s Day works a bit differently in Japan- with women being the gift givers. Women give chocolate not only to their significant other but also friends and co-workers. On White Day, which is March 14, men are expected to return the favor. Therefore, many of the fans giving chocolates to their Ace Attorney favorites were probably women.

Nuri gave a countdown of the most popular characters based on the number of Valentine’s Day gifts they got, beginning with number 8. This spot was quite crowded, with child prodigy Iris Wilson, Imperial Police Bureau Chief Satoru Hosonaga, journalist Raiten Menimemo, Magnus McGilded, Klint van Zieks and Fabien de Rousseau. Even juror 3 and the Masked Apprentice’s servant made the eighth spot. Nuri also revealed that some fans had put down the names of other Ace Attorney characters as the sender. So, he received gifts for Iris from Tobias Gregson and for Raiten from Natsume Soseki, the real-life Japanese author who appears as a character in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

There were 5 characters in the 7th spot; judicial assistant Susato Mikotoba, Gina Lestrade, Genshin Asogi and Enoch Drebber. At number 6 were Professor Yujin Mikotoba, Seishiro Jigoku and Ashley Graydon. Nuri commented that 6th place featured some characters with very bad karma.

In at number 5 was the great detective Herlock Sholmes, who appears to have dropped a few places this year. In 4th place was defense lawyer Kazuma Asogi and in 3rd was the Lord Chief Justice of London Mael Stronghart. At number 2 was the vampire-like “Reaper of the Bailey” prosecutor Barok Von Zieks.

Nuri revealed that the top spot this year goes to the main character Naruhodo Ryunosuke. According to the art director, it is the first time that the protagonist has received the most Valentine’s Day messages and gifts. Which Ace Attorney character would you send Valentine’s chocolates to?

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles are available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam). The compilation is also available in the Turnabout Collection that includes the Phoenix Wright Trilogy.
