This turn-based strategy game involves rabbit farts and medieval manuscripts
Daedalic Entertainment and Yaza games have announced that they will be releasing the full version of the unusual turned-based strategy game Inkulinati on February 22. It will be released simultaneously across multiple platforms (PC, Mac, PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One/Series S|X).
Inkulinati takes inspiration from medieval manuscripts, which sometimes have illustrations of animals and humans in their margins that are both comically amusing and dire. Inkulinati references these images of snail-riding rabbits engaged in battle, strange hybrids and amusing bodily functions and integrates them into a turn-based strategy game.
The characters drawn on the page spring to life, becoming your units. These anthropomorphized animals not only have weapons that determine their range of attack (sword, spear and bow), but they also have different skills depending on their species. For example, bishop cats can heal your army, while toads can give your enemy a cracking headache with their cry. Then there are the farting units that gleefully turn around to unleash a noxious cloud upon your opponents.
In addition to the enemy, players also must contend with the limited space on the page when moving units, while keeping an eye on scenery elements. These can offer benefits, such as ink blots that replenish your supply, or hinder your progress, in the case of plague clouds that can infect your units. You must also watch your ink supply, as this determines what you can draw.
The game, in which a rabbit’s bum or even a snail might end up being mightier than a sword, has been praised for its strategic depth, charming art style and quirky sense of humor. Inkulinati has been in early access since last year, with the developers making improvements based on user feedback. It has also received periodic additions such as new battlefields and units (including bees, dragons, apes and puppy-eating hares). If a tricky turn-based strategy game with an unusual art style and Monty Python-esque humor appeals to you, you might want to consider picking up Inkulinati if you haven’t already.
Inkulinati is currently in Early Access for Xbox, PC and Mac (Steam). The full version of the game is set to be released on February 22 for PC, Mac, PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One/Series S|X.
