This Touhou Project-inspired online arena shooter will be a “bullet-hell battle royale”

MAGIC CHAOS is an upcoming title by Japanese indie studio SUPER STARMINE. The game is set to release on March 8 for the PC (Steam) and will be available in English.

Magic Chaos is a 3D bullet-hell arena shooter that supports solo play and online multiplayer for up to four players. The game boasts simple controls and diverse gameplay. You play as a cute magical girl and aim for victory in “chaotic” bullet-hell battle royales. The player who is the fastest to deplete the opponents’ life bars with a barrage of bullets is the winner.

Magic Chaos’ playable character roster is made up of various magical girls, each possessing a unique ability. For example, Zophie’s ability “Blink” allows her to teleport up to a certain distance from the opponent; whereas Necromance’s “Graze” works by collecting bullets grazed within a 5.5 second period and shooting them back as a counterattack. Additionally, each character can experience “Awakening” when certain conditions are met. The Awakening buffs the character’s performance in some way, such as increasing the speed of her bullets or the number of rounds she can shoot.

After selecting a magical girl, you choose her skills – skills are basically the types of shot the character will fire, and you can select a main skill and sub skill. The main skill can also be shot as a charged attack, which increases its speed and volume (i.e., makes for bigger curtain-fire). There is a wide variety of skills to choose from, categorized into Attack, Diffusion and Special types.

The main mode of Magic Chaos is the online PvP mode, but there is also an offline singleplayer mode where you play against the CPU. There seems to be a selection of arenas to choose from, featuring various environments and layouts.

Magic Chaos’ developer SUPER STARMINE is a Japanese indie dev team originating from a college game development club. They came up with the idea for Magic Chaos out of their love for the bullet-hell shooter series Touhou Project and online multiplayer games. Their intention was to create a game that friends can get hyped over together.

Magic Chaos is scheduled for release on March 8 for the PC (Steam).
